Student Leadership Conference
Welcome and thank you for attending the CA CAMP Statewide Student Leadership Conference hosted by CoolSpeak & Mendocino College CAMP.

This will be an opportunity for our CAMP Scholars from across California to meet, support, encourage and get to know one another during these trying times. Utilizing a mix of virtual platforms including YouTube and Zoom, we will come together for an unforgettable, empowering, and enlightening experience that will prepare our CAMP scholars to excel on our campuses and in our communities.

A welcome session designed to give you an understanding of the purpose and structure of the conference. Come get to know the speakers, facilitators, and other CAMP Scholars you will be working with over the course of the next two days.
Keynote By: Dr. Viridiana Diaz
Dr. Diaz began her tenure as Vice President for Student Affairs at CSUSM on January 13, 2022. Prior to joining our campus community, she served as associate vice president for Strategic Student Support Programs at California State University, Sacramento, where she served as one of the primary vehicles for leveraging student success initiatives, breaking down systemic barriers to success, tending to equity gaps, and achieving goals set for by the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through program development, implementation, assessment, project management, and fundraising.

Leadership ain’t easy, but it’s worth it! Student leaders face major hurdles when it comes to balancing the expectations that come along with their roles. Stay in H.A.R.M.’s Way is a leadership model that empowers students with practical and applicable tools to be a dope leader, excel as a student, and still have time for self-care. It’s time to move away from leadership being about a title or position and level up to leadership that makes an impact on our campus, community, and future. During these virtual dance party breaks, and yes we expect some dancing to take place, dancers with the best moves will win a prize or two for showing off their moves. Finding a dance partner will earn you some bonus points too!


Poet & Award Winning Teacher

Speaker: Joaquin Zihuatanejo
Joaquín Zihuatanejo is an author, poet, spoken word artist, and award-winning teacher. Born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas, Joaquín expertly captures the duality of the Chicano culture.

He’s captivated thousands with his honest depiction of barrio life.

He’s authored a number of books including the critically-acclaimed “Arsonist”. Joaquin is a highly sought educator for his writing workshops, especially college and scholarship essay sessions.

“Written All Over Your Face”

Everyone has a story in them to tell. A poem in them to write and share. In this interactive workshop, award-winning teacher and poet, Joaquín Zihuatanejo, will share a bit of his story in hopes of inspiring writers in the workshop. But more than that, together, we will write an original poem on the theme of a sense of self. Sound intimidating? Trust us, it won’t be, as World Poetry Slam Champion, Joaquín Zihuatanejo will be there to guide you through it all.
