“My Parents’ American Dream”

Presenter: Ernesto Mejia
We all have our own version of our American Dream, but it helps when we know who else sacrificed to make our very own dream come true for us. This keynote address focuses on overcoming adversity, living in two cultures, two languages, and two countries and yet struggling to fit in either of them. It also highlights the importance of education and how it can help us achieve the dream of taking care of ourselves, as well as our parents.

Ernesto Mejia, the proud son of Mexican immigrants, is a true example of the American dream. Diagnosed with the rare disease of Guillain-Barré Syndrome at the age of 16 that left him temporarily paralyzed, he was not supposed to be a successful student, much less a College Dean of Students.

But more than that we will walk away with techniques that will not only make us more successful scholarship recipients but also more successful students while on campus that first year.

“My Father’s Daughter”

Lilyan shares her personal story of overcoming many obstacles as a child and using education as the vehicle to accomplish a fulfilling life. As an undocumented child, working since a young age, overcoming abandonment, and being surrounded by alcoholism, Lilyan’s story is one that connects with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Personal anecdotes take the audience on a roller coaster of emotions, told from the perspective of a 5-year-old scared child to an 8-year-old daughter enamored with her dad to an angry teenager to a first generation High School and College graduate, educator, and national speaker.
